In Oklahoma's Comanche County, Lawton is about 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City on Interstate 44, with the Fort Sill army post nearby to the north. Also north, the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1901, hosts mixed grass prairie where now-rare natural grasslands survive because rocks underfoot defeated plows. At 5th Street and Summit Avenue, the Historic Mattie Beal Home -- once known as the "Finest Home in Lawton" -- ranks as an official 2007 Oklahoma Centennial Project for the southwest region after extensive rehabilitation to recreate 1923 grandeur. The Holy City of the Wichitas -- 110 acres amid the Wichita Mountains -- features 22 circa 1936 buildings constructed of native granite.
The nation's longest running Easter passion play is staged here on the Saturday before Easter, and grounds can be toured free daily until sundown. Other Lawton area attractions include the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum, the Museum of the Great Plains, and the Percussive Arts Museum, featuring the King George marimba, one of only 102 ever made, and designed for the 25th anniversary Golden Jubilee for the Coronation of King George V in 1935. Dining includes chains such as Cracker Barrel, El Chico's, and Golden Corral, plus options like Garfield's Restaurant & Pub, Fisherman's Cove, Fire Mountain, and the Elks Lodge.
